Following the traffic Blue Line stabbing that took the life of Iryna Zarutska, WCNC Charlotte spoke with Jetton & Meredith partner, Mark Jetton, to help the community understand the magistrate's role in the court process.

During the interview, Mark explained that magistrates are often the first judicial offices to see a defendant after an arrest and are responsible for setting initial release conditions. They must quickly evaluate limited information, such as charges, any known criminal history and risk factors, while balancing public safety with the defendant's rights.

He also highlights the challenges magistrates face when resources are limited, making it difficult to gather a complete picture of a defendant's background. Additional support and access to information can help ensure these critical decisions are made as accurately as possible.
