What Is a Parenting Coordinator?

A Parenting Coordinator (PC) is a qualified neutral third party, appointed by the Court or agreed upon by both parents. The Parenting Coordinator helps implement Custody Orders by guiding parents through co-parenting challenges and fostering more effective communication. This role is especially beneficial in high-conflict custody cases.

In accordance with North Carolina law and Mecklenburg County Local Rules, a qualified Parenting Coordinator must hold a Master’s or Doctorate degree in law, psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field, and possess at least five years of experience in family law.

Role and Responsibilities of a Parenting Coordinator

A Parenting Coordinator supports families in a variety of ways, including:

Reducing ongoing conflict between parents.
Teaching and reinforcing effective co-parenting and communication skills.
Providing education on child development and issues related to separation or divorce.
Enhancing parent-child relationships.
Resolving disputes related to custody when not explicitly addressed in the existing Court Order.

The scope as governed by § 50‑92 of a Parenting Coordinator’s authority is outlined in the Court’s Order of appointment, which may also grant the PC the ability to make certain minor decisions when disagreements persist.

When Can a Parenting Coordinator Be Appointed?

Appointment of a Parenting Coordinator may occur:

By request of one or both parents.
As part of a Custody Order.
At the Court’s discretion, if it determines the case is high-conflict and that the children's best interests would be served by the appointment.
