Identify the Correct Agency
Most car accident crash reports within Charlotte city limits are handled by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). If your accident occurred outside city limits, it may be under the jurisdiction of local police or the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Request the Report from CMPD
You can obtain your crash report in person or online:
- In person: Visit the CMPD Records Division at 601 E. Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. Bring a valid photo ID and complete the “Request for Motor Vehicle Crash Report” form. Reports obtained in person are free of charge.
- Online: Crash reports are available online through the CMPD’s Crash Reports System or via LexisNexis for a convenience fee of $6.00. Reports usually become available online 3-5 business days after the accident
